Postby cdemoulins » Wed Apr 04, 2012 8:48 pm (link to this post)

Hi,
I tried to launch Trine2 on my archlinux distribution and it fail after 10 sec with a segmentation fault.

Here some information on my environment :
- distribution: archlinux x86_64
- kernel: 3.2.13
- video driver: nvidia 295.33
- GPU: nvidia 320m
- CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo P8800

I tried to retrieve a backtrace but there's no symbol so here what i get:

do u have 32bit libs installed (dunno how its called in archlinux)
multilib?..maybe...not sure..anyway.. for trine2 you need 32bit compatibility libraries.

works fine for me on 64bit Mint with ia32libs installed
Linux Mint 13 alpha 64bit
* AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE (3,2 ghz)
* 8GB ddr3 1600mhz
* Asus GTX 560Ti DirectCU

This one certainly should be a working configuration. I actually have Fedora 16 x86_64 installed on my work computer (as one of the Linux distributions I've tested). The CPU and graphics card is a bit different though. (But I do have an NVidia card on this computer as well).

Based on the stack trace, the window creation fails for some reason. I can only image it has something to do with the display drivers / OpenGL libraries / or such.

- Have you tried starting the game in both windowed and fullscreen modes?
- Do you have other OpenGL games installed that could be verified that it is working correctly?

- distribution: archlinux x86_64
- kernel: 3.2.13
- video driver: nvidia 295.33
- GPU: nvidia 320m
- CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo P8800

I'm not sure if our QA has tested archlinux, we'll probably have to test that one out too, to see if there are some problems with its libraries or such. A quick look at the stack trace I did find a bit baffling though - it indicates that the issue would be in spotlight rendering, which might make sense if it somehow fails some shadow buffer creation or such - but the baffling part was that the backtrace didn't quite seem go as it should. I'll have to take a closer look at that.

So, at the moment, so far all I can guess about that is that the issue might have something to do with rendering, but this requires a bit further investigation to say anything for sure.

Yes, I've tried both.

Amnesia, Cogs, Minecraft and Zen Bound 2 run properly. In addition there where never problems with Blender and I'm programming a library that uses OpelGL and works fine, too.

Btw, I'm using the nvidia-(a)kmod packages from rpmfusion.

Ok, thanks for the informations. I'm waiting for fix or an update. Do you need some additional informations ?

I just installed Trine2 on my Fedora Core 16 system and got similar results, so I'm posting here. If you think I should open a new thread, please say so.

System:
- 3.3.0-8.fc16.x86_64
- i7 2600 - nVidia 560 TI
- installation as non-root user 'neek' to custom directory /opt/games/Trine2 (normal folder on / mount point, no symlinks involved)

Fresh linux install less than a week ago. Installer installed some 32 bit libraries as expected, but when I tried to run I got errors finding libGLU, so I installed mesa-libGLU.i686 to get the 32 libraries.

Could it be a mismatch between your libSDL stuff in ./lib, and the other SDL libraries in /usr/lib on my system? I notice it's linking against ./lib/lib32/libSDL-1.3.so.0 and no other *SDL* library, yet you listed SDL.i686 as a prerequisite for install.

I'll leave this report at that and see if anyone can suggest anything..?

Hi,

I'm also having segmentation fault problems (on Fedora 16 and Arch):

Code: Select all
[root@sadam-desktop ~]# uname -a
Linux sadam-desktop 3.2.14-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Apr 3 17:07:25 UTC 2012 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500 CPU @ 3.30GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

glxinfo (part of it):
Code: Select all
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GTX 560/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.33
OpenGL shading language version string: 4.20 NVIDIA via Cg compiler

gdb probably won't say anything new here, but just in case...

Fedora:
Code: Select all
[sadam@sadam-desktop Trine2]$ gdb ./bin/trine2_linux_32bit

Tried few options (window mode, different resolutions, detail level etc). Trine 1 runs ok.

To everyone who has a 64-bit distro and an Nvidia GPU:

These lines are from output of ldd on a working Trine 1 installation:
Code: Select all
libnvidia-tls.so.295.33 => /usr/lib32/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.295.33 (0xf5665000)
libnvidia-glcore.so.295.33 => /usr/lib32/libnvidia-glcore.so.295.33 (0xf3a33000)

These lines are IMPORTANT! If you don't have them that means the game is not actually trying to use the Nvidia driver. You have not correctly installed the 32-bit libraries. Any fooling around with core dumps, gdb or backtraces is not going to do anyone any good.

Also in this situation glxinfo is NOT useful because the glxinfo binary on the system is 64-bit and will correctly see the 64-bit libraries. To get meaningful output you would have to find a 32-bit glxinfo binary. This is left as an exercise for the reader.

Note about gdb stacktraces: if you see ANY references to libGL in your stack trace (on Nvidia and ATI proprietary drivers at least) the stack trace is pretty much useless because the drivers don't keep the frame pointer and that stops gdb from correctly tracing through their stack frames.

You could also avoid all these problems by making a native 64-bit port of Trine 2.

Thanks art_turo, it was the problem. I installed lib32 version of nvidia-utils and now it work fine.

Works for me, too, thanks. :)

Hopefully there will be a 64bit-version of the game.

'pacman -S lib32-nvidia-utils' worked for me, thanks :)

Glad to know this issue got solved and people have got it working now.

It was getting a bit tricky trying to reproduce the issue. I just did a clean Fedora 16 install to try it out, but unfortunately it didn't crash for me. :D Probably, because I tend to install the nvidia drivers by downloading them from the nvidia driver download page rather than the package manager, and I answered yes to the question about installing the 32 compatibility libraries that the driver installer asked. Obviously I should have first tested it without them, knowing well that those are required and not having them might cause some havoc. :)

It did turn out, however, that the Trine 2 installer missed a whole bunch of required libraries for Fedora 16 though, so I'll be adding those to it for the next patch. Additionally, putting in some checks for the nvidia driver libraries seems like a feasible addition. (I'll also post the Trine 2 required library installation notes for the fresh Fedora 16 installation tomorrow, just in case anyone who is having trouble with the required libraries would find them useful.)
