Questions for the Developers

Trine is Frozenbyte's latest game, released in 2009 for PC and on PSN.

Questions for the Developers

Postby chip5541 » Mon Dec 08, 2008 6:50 pm (link to this post)

I thought this could be a good thread to get your questions answered if the devs are up to it. Just to get the ball rolling...

The game has only recently been officially announced, how long have you been working on Trine?

What made you decide to use PSN distribution?

What was your inspiration for the game?

Has it been hard coding for the PS3?

How many people do you have working on the game?

Has Sony had any input in the game?

How supportive has Sony been when it comes to bringing games to the PS3?

Any chance of getting a couple of pictures of the game to post elsewhere?

*** About the game ***

Will the game come with trophy support?

Based on the 2 characters in the trailer will each character have there own route or level? ie each level design based on the type of character you choose.

Will the game be strictly single player (based on the trailer) or will there be multiplayer support?

Any easter eggs or hidden areas?

Will there be any tools to allow players to design their own levels?

*** Future ***

Once completed do you have some ideas for future PS3 games? Maybe bring Shadowgrounds to the PSN?

only one question here...

Will there be a internet/LAN multiplayer? Coop in that kinda of game could be awesome but would probably require a lot more work from developpers.

will it be available on steam and/or xbox 360 marketplace?
How much and what did Nobilis contribute on this game? Are they the publisher/distributer?
What engine are you guys using? Will it be using steamworks?

Hi,
I saw the video of your new fantasy game. In the beginning of the video I thought tath this game was designed for Wii but than I was wonder this is a game for PC and PSN.

Do you think that a wii version of this game could be produced?

So many questions! To be honest, we don't want to answer all these questions right now. Some of the answers will be revealed in previews and interviews, and others we will later make official announcements about.

But some answers that I can provide:

- Trine uses our own inhouse game engine (the same as in the Shadowgrounds games) but of course it's been improved a lot.

- We're roughly 20 people strong, a bit less currently but some new blood will come in next year to help finish the game in time.

- Once we launch the website next month, there will be a fansite kit and extra screenshots. And possibly a development diary as well.

- Yes there will be easter eggs. I think it's worthwhile reading this blog post again, now that the game is announced.

- Nobilis is the worldwide publisher for the PSN version and almost worldwide for PC version (only excluding Russia and some minor territories). The game will be distributed in retail and online for PC, and we obviously aim to have the game available at Steam and other download channels as well. You can expect a pretty good selection of choices regarding that. So far Trine has only been announced for PSN and PC, other platforms may be announced later or become available after the original release, but there's no news I can say at this point. We know there's a lot of demand for other versions...

- Sony and Nobilis both have been great to work with and we're really happy with them.

- There will be Trophy support, but the full extent is yet to be determined.

- Shadowgrounds for PSN... let's see what the future holds. :)

I suggest you check 1UP.com's preview/interview as well.

I hope this satisfies some. We'll be doing more work here at the community in the coming weeks, e.g. post some cool new screenshots and such. :)

Can you give us a hint on the inclusion of 3D gaming for the game? DLB received confirmation from Blitz Games Studios that Sony “fully intends” to support stereoscopic 3D gaming and Blu-ray 3D on the Sony Playstation 3". If not planned now, would you be interested in adding it later?

3D gaming sounds interesting but it's not going to happen for Trine release. We'll be keeping an eye on this though, and see what happens in the future. :)

Hiho, I have two questions:

1. If there are puzzles(well, from what I saw from the trailer, there are), are there then some hard ones that actually makes you think? I really love hard puzzles, but sometimes it's good to have easier ones too. So, will there be hard and easy puzzles?

2. About the music. The music in the trailer was amazing, so the question is that will there be a background music in the game much? That kind of music would really fit in the game.

Hi, Trine is looking really good. I was just wondering if there would be any exclusive content for the PS3? Really looking forward to the release and keep up the great work guys! :D

There are a wide range of puzzles, and when the game progresses the puzzles also turn harder, requiring player to figure out a clever solution for it. Of course, each puzzle can be solved in numerous ways, and each character has it's own ways solving puzzles. Also, player can create the solution to suit his play style.

Puzzles also turn harder if one or two characters are dead, as player has to continue with remaining characters until next checkpoint is reached and dead character(s) are revived. In this case player is forced to figure out the solution with the remaining one or two characters, which may require even more thinking.

In addition, one element which also affects difficulty is the co-op, which allows two or three players to use very unique physics solutions which are only possible in the co-op play. As players can freely join and leave the game (single player can be turned to co-op and back to single player even), players can ask a friend to help even with one puzzle they find hard :). Examples of these co-op solutions will be seen in the next trailer, which should be out during April.

The music in trailer is from the game, and the game will have soundtrack like that. Each level will have a song which suits it. We will most likely also release a separate soundtrack.

Wow, this game looks really gorgeous!
When will you be releasing the system requirements?
Will there be a demo?

Most likely there will be only 720p, but we are still looking if we can optimize the game enough for 1080p.

The final system requirements are decided once our QA is completed, that should be within a few months.

There will be both PSN and PC demos, most likely after the release of the full version.

I know you talked about Co-op, will this be offline or online co-op or both?

We will most likely have only same system co-op at the launch. However, we will build that co-op in a very user-frienfly manner, allowing for example live joining and leaving (changing single player to co-op and vice versa on the fly).

oh ok, so I'm assuming that in co-op you would share the 3 characters, meaning I could play as the wizard and my buddy could be a warrior, but we both couldn't play the same guy.

"Same system co-op." So that means no LAN coop isn't planned? Meh... If you made a LAN coop people would have had an online coop too. ;P
