A thousand ways to do the same thing

September 21, 2011 by Mikael | Category: Trine 2

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, but expecting a different outcome.

So what do you call it when you do a whole bunch of different things to get the same outcome? Sanity?

Maybe it doesn’t work exactly like that, but one thing that I am sure about is that in Trine 2 you can find almost an endless array of solutions to even the simplest looking puzzles.

I constantly hear tales of how new people come up with weird ways to solve particular puzzles. Ways that we never really even thought about, but seem really logical when they are used.

So far I had never seen one of these “eureka” moments, but last week I actually became a part of one. I was testing out a level that I had not played before, when suddenly everyone around me burst into laughter. At first I thought that I had done something wrong, but then I heard someone say “that was pretty effing awesome, wonder why we never thought about it like that”.

This is something that will happen a lot and we can’t wait to see how many different and crazy ways to solve the puzzles the players come up with.

  2. It looks like male characters are the main problem solvers. Basically, as long as you can figure out the way to send one player to higher ground, the rest is easy. In Trine 1, when I get to the top, I enjoy going back and try it again in different ways.

  3. That last move is funny. I’m really looking forward to this game. Will it launch in the Mac App store at the same time as PC and PSN? I have some money on a gift card that I’m saving for this.

  4. Very interesting how Trine is actually shifting gameplay from “just solve a puzzle” to “find as many (fun) ways to solve a puzzle as you can”.

  6. Trine 2 plays well in single player, two-player and three player, offline and online, and with any character combination :D

The different player and character amounts change the experience a bit, as the solutions to puzzles may greatly vary depending on which characters are available at that time. What is guaranteed that all modes will be super-fun! :D
